It is the summer of 1919 in Nantucket.  At the engagement party for blue blood “Chip” Chatamborough and the pushy (though socially desirable) “Bitsy” Claypoole, Chip meets the exotic Madeline Mojeaux (daughter of Diabolique Mojeaux, who saved his life during the war).  It is love at first site, but Chip is to be married, and Madeline is scheduled to be sacrificed to the Ruler of the Netherworld at the next full moon.  It is something of a dilemma.  While the two are trying to find a solution, Madeline accidentally dances off the roof to an untimely death.  With the help of Madeline’s mystical mother, Chip fakes his own death to follow Madeline beyond the grave, hoping to reclaim the one true love of his life.

Mortatus, Ruler of the Netherworld, agrees to release Madeline’s reanimated body to Chip, but keeps her spirit in the Netherworld until Chip can pass a test.  He must return to his family, and pass Madeline off as “alive” (controlling her every movement with a zombie doll) until the next full moon.

As Nantucket’s upper crust gathers to mourn the death of the Chatamborough scion, Chip interrupts his own funeral, and presents his new bride (a strangely quiet and submissive Madeline). He settles into married life with the perfect companion, one who will do his every bidding and obey his every command.

But Chip’s spurned fiancee, Bitsy, is especially suspicious. She enlists the help of the Chatamborough's butler, E. S. Popov, to uncover the truth: that the beautiful, compliant new mistress of Chatamborough manor is a member of the walking dead, a zombie, whose every move is controlled by her husband Chip.

On the evening of the full moon, just as Bitsy (and company) are about to expose Madeline, Chip faces the Ruler of the Netherwold again. The depth of Chip’s love for Madeline is the key to his triumph, and Madeline’s spirit is reunited with her body. She lives again! Bitsy concedes defeat and wishes the new couple happiness. Chip faces a life married to the woman he loves, but cannot control, happily ever after.
